Windows Server 2008, Vista SP1 RTM and available for download in MSDN

6 02 2008

“Microsoft announced that two of its most important products of the last half-decade are complete and ready to be shipped.

Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 were released to manufacturing (RTM), marking a dual milestone in the history of both products. It also means that Windows 2008 will be officially shipping by the “Global Launch Wave” of enterprise products on Feb. 27. Others include Visual Studio 2008, released last year, and SQL Server 2008, which was recently pushed back to Q3.”

Just got the news today, will try to download later. This is really good news. I am already planning to attend one of the events in the launch wave in New York. I’m sure with this addition, it will be even more interesting. ๐Ÿ™‚

Does this mean MSFT shares bull market again. Hehe Just like Vista and Office 2007?? Hmm lets just see. Hehehe

Java is becoming the new Cobol

7 01 2008

“Java is becoming the new Cobol” brave statement from one of the 2007’s top underreported tech stories.

The Story: Java, the oldest new programming language around, is falling out of favor with developers. When it comes to developing the increasingly common rich Internet applications, Java is losing ground to Ruby on Rails, PHP, AJAX and other cool new languages. And there are even reports that Microsoftโ€™s .Net, of all things, is pushing Java out of the enterprise. Makes you wonder whether Sun was smart to change its stock-ticker code to JAVA last summer.

What I found cool is this:

Info-Tech Research Group said its survey of 1,850 businesses found .Net the choice over Java among businesses of all sizes and industries, thanks to its promotion via Visual Studio and SharePoint. Microsoft is driving uptake of the .Net platform at the expense of Java,” says George Goodall, a senior research analyst at Info-Tech.

Happy New Year 2008

4 01 2008

Just got back to work yesterday. This is already a bit late. Happy New Year guys.

To start the year, just found out that Microsoft Singapore is offering some free certifications for the community user groups. To those interested, dont miss this opportunity. Check this link out.

I am still finishing reading the book Way of the Turtle: The Secret Methods that Turned Ordinary People into Legendary Traders. I think I have different main priorities and goals for this year, and getting a certification is just not it yet. Well since this is free I’ll just decide if I’m going to take this promotion after I finish reading the book.

Here is the book to those interested:

ASP.NET MVC Framework preview and other releases

13 12 2007

This is really exciting. The most anticipated ASP.NET MVC framework built by the ASP.NET team finally released a preview. You can now install it in your machine and try it with Visual Studio 2008. They released it as an ASP.NET 3.5 Extension. With this, I would really want to compare it with patterns & practices Web Client Software Factory MVP implementation that we are currently using. I hope to learn more on this new framework.

The ASP.NET 3.5 Extensions CTP showcases MVC, support for REST, additional AJAX functionality, and dynamic data controls, according to a blog posting by Microsoft Developer Division General Manager Scott Guthrie. (It is not a reiteration of ASP.NET Futures released in June 2007.)

The ASP.NET 3.5 Extensions CTP follows Visual Studio 2008 and .NET Framework 3.5, released to manufacturing on November 19. .NET 3.5 integrates ASP.NET AJAX and LINQ. It also adds support for nested Web pages and data view and data grid controls.

Microsoft also released Entity Framework Beta 3 last December 6, 2007. Office 2007 SP1 has also been released and is already available for download. Details can be found below.

Interesting SOA WCF and ASP.NET case study

20 11 2007

I found this really interesting performance benchmark for creating a SOA application based on Windows Communication Foundation (.NET 3.0) and ASP.NET. The application is really cool as they made it interoperable with J2EE IBM Websphere’s Trade 6.1 sample application.

I knew about this information while reading Presentations from the last Microsoft SOA & BP 2007 conference. You can check out Greg Leake’s presentation about .Net Stock Trader App & Interoperability.

Continue reading the following for more information:

.NET StockTrader Sample Application
An End-to-End Sample Application Illustrating Windows Communication Foundation and .NET Enterprise Technologies

This application is an end-to-end sample application for .NET Enterprise Application Server technologies. It is a service-oriented application based on Windows Communication Foundation (.NET 3.0) and ASP.NET, and illustrates many of the .NET enterprise development technologies for building highly scalable, rich “enterprise-connected” applications. It is designed as a benchmark kit to illustrate alternative technologies within .NET and their relative performance.

Visual Studio 2008 out now!!!

20 11 2007

Visual Studio 2008 and .NET Framework 3.5 has finally released to manufacturing(RTM). It is now available to download for MSDN Subscribers. This is really exciting for us developers as this can really make us more productive with the numerous wonderful features they have in this release.

ย I am also looking forward with the upcoming launch of these products here in Singapore. If I can join the launch, this would be my first time attending a Microsoft launch here in Singapore. With this coming, I just can always remember the last launch of VS 2005, SQL 2005 and BTS 2006 in the Philippines, it was really very informative and we had lots to learn. It was as the same time fun, as we prepared some games for the members and those interested to join the Philippines SQL Server User Group (PHISSUG). I missed those days.

This would still be a long time to wait as I think the launch will be held somewhere Q1 next year. We just wouldn’t know. But I am sure it is worth the wait.

Make sure you also read the links below especially Soma’s blog post and his Q&A with presspass.

Facebook founder billionaire; Facebook Developer Party Singapore

25 10 2007

Facebook has really created a big name now. It is gaining lots of interest not only to the social networking fanatics but also to business guys and the like.

Imagine because of its very big user-base and visits daily, lots of web marketing and advertisement business opportunity are found. No wonder the founder, Mark Zuckerberg that own 30 percent of the company became a 5 paper billionaire. This makes him one of the richest 20+ persons. (Or can you say kid? Hehehe :D) (See links for the source and articles).

I just attended yesterday I think the first Facebook Developer party here in Singapore. The event was quite interesting. It was just that I wasn’t able to relate that much to what they were talking as I was still that new with Facebook. I got a bit sleepy and the day was just so tiring at work that’s why I wasn’t able to appreciate it that much. For me, at least, it was a nice experience. I got a chance to know what is happening in Facebook, I will have to try exploring the rich applications there one of these days.

It was really nice to meet a lot of interesting people there. Got to meet few pinoy guys from Microsoft. Some old acquaintances and few new. And got a chance to meet another pinoy guy from NY who develops real facebooks app. (Got to try them. But need to look for them first. Hehehe)

A lot of these guys are really into Facebook application development. I have been made aware of the infinite possibilities that one can do to earn or just make people have fun through this event. Twas nice meeting all of you guys.
